As an anchor institution of the South Bronx, the history Hostos Community College and its struggle to survive and triumph falls squarely on the brave and strong Puerto Rican community that demanded a place of higher learning in once one of the most devastated areas of the United States. Fifty years on its mission and spot on 149th a Street and Grand Concourse is as relevant as ever. “After Maria” is a captured snapshot of what happened after Hurricane María in New York City, and specifically the Bronx. Its making has a story that connects to Hostos and the Puerto Rican diaspora of New York City.
