Atmospheric & Environmental Science: Next Chapter in Resilience: Atlantic Hurricanes: Tomorrow’s Solutions to Enhancing Prediction and Bolstering Resilience

Time: 2:15 PM - 3:45 PM, November 19

Location: Student Success Center - Campus Center

This panel will be focused on Atlantic-basin hurricanes, including how hurricanes are forecast and an assessment of long-term variations in hurricane activity, as well as how risk is communicated and the socio economic impacts are assessed. The panel will discuss the importance of observations and numerical models in making accurate forecasts of track and intensity, including an assessment of how observing and modeling strategies might be improved in the future and what research is needed to facilitate this progress. Finally, the panel will discuss how the public receive and react to available forecast information before and during an evolving event, as well as the population, migration and socio economic impacts of tropical cyclones using Hurricane Maria as a case study.
