Higher education is extraordinarily well positioned to contribute to our global society’s response to climate change and extreme weather – more so today than at any time in our history. This panel discussion will explore how universities and colleges can bring to bear the extensive expertise and resources across academia to fortify our local communities’ ability to withstand, recover from, and adapt to climate-related disasters. Panelists will share their expertise and experiences in addressing complex problems through i) engaged research, ii) education and training, iii) instructional and research technologies, and iv) service learning and community engagement. The panel will highlight how these four cornerstones in higher education can inform new strategies, practices, policies, pedagogy, R&D, and innovative technologies to increase the resilience of local communities nationwide. Moreover, the panel will explore how universities and colleges have a unique opportunity to bridge the sciences and humanities, while working with a broad array of partners to create new understandings and frameworks to address the vexing human challenges associated with the adverse effects of climate change.
