Transforming University Engagement In Pre- and Post-Disaster Environments: Lessons from Puerto Rico

Ethics of Research: The Ethical Challenges of Disaster Research

Time: 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM, November 18

Location: Assembly Hall - Campus Center

Disasters are traumatic processes in which communities are particularly vulnerable; they lack basic services and are often in need of external support. The often extractive nature of scientific research, and the perishable nature of disaster-related data put universities in a competitive race to reach these Extreme Operating Environments (EOEs). That poses questions on their capacity to give “informed consent” to participate in academic research, which is the fundamental requirement of doing research with human subjects. This panel explores several initiatives that, from different perspectives, are looking into addressing the ethical singularities of doing research in the aftermath of disasters.
