RISE 2019 Conference

Environmental and scientific journalist with 14 years of experience, Gerardo Alvarado-León works for the main newspaper in Puerto Rico, El Nuevo Día, since 2006. He is in charge of the daily agenda and investigations on topics such as climate change, natural disasters, pollution, coastal erosion, biodiversity, infrastructure, and community issues, among others. He runs a weekly section called “Ambiente Hoy” (Environment Today). Also, in his role as Team Leader, he edits the Science section. His stories have been recognized by the Puerto Rico Journalists Association, the Overseas Press Club of Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rico Energy Efficiency & Sustainability Alliance, and the Environmental Protection Agency. Outside El Nuevo Día, he is a Board member at the Overseas Press Club of Puerto Rico, and he has taught the Environmental Communication course in the Environmental Sciences Department at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) Río Piedras campus. He’s also a member of the Society of Environmental Journalists and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. He has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and geography from the School of Communication and the Department of Social Sciences at the UPR-Río Piedras, and a master’s degree in environmental education from the School of Environmental Affairs at the Metropolitan University of Puerto Rico.
