RISE 2019 Conference

Dr. William J. Fritz is President and Professor of Geology at the College of Staten Island, a senior college of The City University of New York. He is also a member of the Earth and Environmental Sciences Doctoral Faculty at the CUNY Graduate Center. 

Dr. Fritz is an internationally known field geologist and has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles and guidebooks on sedimentation around modern and ancient explosive volcanoes, sedimentology, stratigraphy, paleobotany, storm surges, and disaster planning. His research interests are on the volcanoclastic sedimentation and tectonics of southwestern Montana in response to the Yellowstone hotspot and on volcanic controls on sedimentation in Ordovician rock in Wales and Ireland. He has authored two textbooks and a popular book, Roadside Geology of the Yellowstone Country, convened a prestigious Penrose Conference, published in Nature and Science, and participated in international initiatives. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy. He has been an outspoken advocate in New York for sustainable management of coastlines in the face of rising sea levels. His publications include storm surges and disaster planning following Superstorm Sandy and he served on the Governor Cuomo’s taskforce on NY Rising Communities.

His work has recently been featured and quoted in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Huffington Post, The Weather Channel, The Staten Island Advance. His work has been featured at numerous scientific conferences and at Cain’s New York Business. Dr. Fritz has also published on programs leading to student success.
