Transforming University Engagement In Pre- and Post-Disaster Environments: Lessons from Puerto Rico

Renewable Energy: Challenges Facing Renewable Energy Penetration in At-Risk & Disaster Related Areas

Time: 2:15 PM - 3:45 PM, November 18

Location: Multipurpose Room - Campus Center Expansion

This first panel on renewable energy will focus on the challenges facing renewable energy deployment in Puerto Rico. In the context of the island’s current power grid infrastructure, its industries and governing policies, its energy requirements, and its climatic environment defining both resource availability and weather-induced risks, the panel will discuss the physical and institutional barriers and opportunities facing renewable energy development. In particular, the panel will address the complementary objectives of resiliency (e.g., via microgrids) and high renewable penetration – two objectives with different fundamentals that must be fully understood and addressed upfront to foster the most effective solutions.
