Arm Chair Discussion: Moving Forward: A Conversation on Advancing Thinking Regarding Resiliency and the Governance of Uncertainty

Time: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM, November 20

Location: Ballroom - Campus Center

As our global climate continues to change, so does the frequency, intensity and variability of weather extremes and the disasters linked to them. These changes make growing uncertainty and risk an unavoidable reality and present a governance challenge to the public, private and non-profit sectors. organizations clearly need to become more integrated and adaptive in the face of the growing uncertainty related to climate change, but the question is how? This panel will explore advances in resiliency thinking and ways decision makers are and/or need to be adjusting to the new governance of uncertainty. Specifically, the panel will look at the complexities associated with the diverse sets of stakeholders across local, state and federal levels of government, as well as those in higher education, business and the nonprofit sector. The challenges and constraints associated with decision-making range from assuring analytic quality, to securing social and political backing, to managing available time and resources, and exploiting human and artificial intelligence. Promising opportunities exist for leaders and their organizations to leverage existing programs and resources, new paradigms of convergence research and innovation, public-private partnerships and technology in unprecedented ways. Accordingly, this panel will examine how institutions of higher education can contribute to addressing the resiliency challenges confronting society today with the goal of making our communities safer, more resilient, and better able to take protective action in a new era of uncertainty.
