Public Health Preparedness & Recovery from Natural Disaster: What Preparedness Efforts and Recovery Strategies Can Reduce Health Impacts from Natural Disasters?

This panel discussion will focused on what more effective actions or strategies are needed during disasters. Dr. Cruz from the US CDC will moderate this session. Each panelist will share their experiences with health-related hurricane planning and response and make recommendations on what more needs to be done (5-10 min each). Preparedness Deputy Director Ethier and Dr. Guthartz will share their experience and recommendations from the New York State and New York City health departments, respectively. Mr. Stuart will discuss improved weather forecasting and allow earlier and more targeted warnings of an approaching hurricane. Ms. Riley-Jacome will provide recommendations on how to improve community outreach and intervention after natural disasters. Dr. Penta will discuss inter-professional collaboration in disaster health and medical services. Dr. Lin will provide recommendations on how to improve disaster data collection and how to do better public health surveillance during a hurricane.
