Film Screening: Dis.em.POWER.ed: Puerto Rico’s Perfect Storm

The film “DisemPOWERed: Puerto Rico's Perfect Storm,” examines the cultural, economic and political reasons behind the collapse of PR electrical system after the impact of Hurricane Maria in September of 2017.  This 50 minute documentary was produced by Dr. Sandy Smith Nonini, an anthropologist of energy affiliated to University of North Carolina, and Roque Nonini, a filmmaker from New York. After the screening of the film we will engage in conversation with the filmmakers, Mr. Angel Figueroa Jaramillo, President of the workers union (UTIER) at PREPA, and Dr. Fernando Tormos, political scientist affiliated to University of Maryland College Park and Johns Hopkins University.
