Risk communication has become an essential element of modern disaster management systems. At the same time, scientific and academic research about hazards has become very sophisticated in the last decades. It is assumed that this knowledge is at the center of the emergency managment-media-public relationship. However, problems such as the disconnect between the information provided and the public’s perception of risk, are still present. The competition among media outlets brings a cacophony of messages that deviates from the research, makes emergency management a difficult task. This panel brings together media practitioners, academics and boundary spanning individuals, to explore a variety of ways in which universities, media and artists can work together in translating scientific and academic research into real-life knowledge to enhance community resilience and disaster response and recovery.
