Transforming University Engagement In Pre- and Post-Disaster Environments: Lessons from Puerto Rico

Climate Adaptation 1: Stories from the Front Line: Local Government Experiences with Extreme Events

Time: 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM, November 18

Location: Multipurpose Room - Campus Center Expansion

The challenges facing local governments and communities in the climate change era are vast. The frequency and intensity of weather extremes ranging from destructive hurricanes, inland and coastal flooding, extreme heat, wild fires, tornados, severe snow, ice storms among others have dramatically increased the complexities facing public officials – particularly at the local level. These events challenge local government decision-makers across the pre- and post-disaster preparedness, response and recovery continuum. This panel session will hear stories both from experts who work closely with public officials, as well as from those on the front lines, about the range of complexities confronting local governments. Additionally, the panel will seek to identify areas of opportunity where institutions of higher education can help address the challenges spanning governance, decision-making, emergency management, resource allocation, policy-making, inter- and intra-agency collaboration, along with research and workforce development to name a few.
