Transforming University Engagement In Pre- and Post-Disaster Environments: Lessons from Puerto Rico

Leaders' Roundtable: Transformation through Convergence

Time: 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM, November 20

Location: Ballroom - Campus Center

The very nature of disaster resilience demands transformative cross-disciplinary and cross-sectoral solutions. Community preparedness for and response to climate-related disasters present a wide array of complexities for local, state and federal government – particularly given the spectrum of financial resources, intellectual capital, infrastructure, and governance and decision-making structures that differ from one community/jurisdiction to another. These differences in resources and capabilities are further complicated by multi-level governance, along with the multitude of extreme weather event types on the rise that necessitate tailored responses and solutions across sectors. As such, it is imperative that disaster resilience be rooted in a construct that embraces convergence. Collaboration across the levels and sectors of governance and convergence across academic disciplines and professions is needed to generate the next generation of solutions to safeguard and protect our communities. This Leaders’ Roundtable will explore the critical importance of bridging the divide between practice and interdisciplinary research, the challenges and complexities associated with convergence science, and the road ahead in developing and implementing a new resiliency paradigm.
