Transforming University Engagement In Pre- and Post-Disaster Environments: Lessons from Puerto Rico
Transforming University Engagement In Pre- and Post-Disaster Environments: Lessons from Puerto Rico
Universities are often quick and eager to provide assistance to disaster-stricken communities through service/learning activities, formal courses, and/or voluntary disaster relief initiatives. Although very well intentioned, these activities are often very difficult to coordinate because of the lack of contextual knowledge about the location or culture, and/or knowledge about who are the main actors on the ground and how to serve them better. Some have also suggested that the groups could be consuming valuable and scarce resources that are vital for community’s survival. This panel presents several examples of universities service/learning initiatives, courses and volunteering and the logistical aspects that need to be considered in the coordination of such initiatives.
