Public Health Preparedness & Recovery from Natural Disaster: Public Health’s Impact After Hurricanes and Natural Disasters

Dr. Birkhead, former Deputy Commissioner for Public Health of New York State Department of Health, will moderate this Session. The first speaker, Dr. Cruz from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will introduce CDC’s leadership and activities in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Professor Nitza from SUNY-New Paltz will then discuss disaster exposure, mental health, and social support aftermath Hurricane Maria. Mr. Malavé from Puerto Rico Department of Health will introduce their efforts and activities during Hurricane Maria disaster. Finally, Drs. Lin and Zhang from SUNY-Albany will describe how Hurricane Sandy affected multiple diseases in NYS and how their research helps to identify community vulnerabilities using available data.
