Transforming University Engagement In Pre- and Post-Disaster Environments: Lessons from Puerto Rico

Multi-sectorial Relationships: University-Diaspora Relations: the Other Side of Community Resilience

Time: 10:45 AM - 12:15 PM, November 19

Location: Boardroom - Campus Center Expansion

When Maria impacted Puerto Rico, diasporic communities were at the heart of the most effective response and recovery efforts.  While government agencies were struggling with lack of personnel, equipment and knowledge about the context and conditions on the ground, groups of diasporic Puerto Ricans were very effective in using their resources and organizing capabilities for the distribution of first aid in the most affected and isolated communities. This panel will explore transgeographycal, transborder, identity based communities and the role they play in resilience building in both pre and post disaster situation.
