Transforming University Engagement In Pre- and Post-Disaster Environments: Lessons from Puerto Rico

University Role In Relief: Reflections on Universities’ New Roles in Disaster Response

Time: 2:15 PM - 3:45 PM, November 19

Location: PAC Main Theater

Disaster scientists usually adopt an event centered model in their observations. Waiting for events to happen to extract perishable data allows for the concentration of knowledge in the Ivory Towers from which it can be commercialized and sold back to customers that can afford it.  However, that model is being confronted with the realities of Climate Change. The anthropocene calls for academic policy entrepreneurship and collaborative partnerships towards the co-production of knowledge with non scientific communities. This panel will present examples, reflections and possibilities to help us visualize what the new role of institutions of higher education should be in disaster management systems.
